William T. Kerr and the Birthplace of a National Day of Honor

The Borough of Yeadon holds a place of historical significance in the annals of American History due to the contributions of the founder of Flag Day – William T. Kerr.  Mr. Kerr born in Pittsburgh, but moved to Yeadon as an adult and made it his home until his passing in 1953. Kerr was most noted for championing flag day – lobbying every American President from William McKinley to Harry S. Truman to have Old Glory recognized with its own national day of honor.

It was with great pride and joy that President Truman invited Mr. Kerr to witness the signing into law our now famous observance – June 14th as Flag Day – at the White House on August 3, 1949. This historic legislation has forever catapulted Yeadon as the birthplace of Flag Day along with life-long Pennsylvanian and Yeadonite – Mr. William T. Kerr.
